And Who the Hell Are YOU?

Hey, I go by Ryan F. Hughes, per-feshunally! The things I do perfeshunally are writing, directing and acting, mainly for theatre, though I am branching out into film/TV/etc. I’m from Edmonton (more or less) and currently I live in Toronto. I worked on a lot of indie theatre stuff in Edmonton in all three disciplines, a lot of it with Human Loser Theatre, the company I co-founded with Morgan Smith. I graduated from the Playwriting program of the National Theatre School of Canada in 2004. Playwriting credits include The Monkeyhouse,a monologue from which has been published one or two popular audition piece collections, as well as Grimwag, Over the Mountains, On the Hook (finalist in Reverie Theatre’s 2009 Next Generation playwriting competition in New York City), and the Sterling Award-nominated Breaking Face (with Morgan Smith), as well as contributions to Pony Productions’ Sterling winner Change Room, as well as their anthologies Outer Spaces, Rocking Out, and LoveHateKill. I wrote the screenplay for the award-winning short film How to Marry a Mink.

I started this blog as a way to regain some momentum with my writing. Anyone who’s written a lot will tell you that the less you do it, the harder it is to do. Inspired by Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 Days – 365 Plays, I decided , like her, to write a (short) piece of theatre every day for a year. Unlike her, I am likely being an idiot and blogging it.
